    Stamping (also known as pressing) is the process of placing flat sheet metal in either blank or coil form into a stamping press where a tool and die surface forms the metal into a net shape. Stamping includes a variety of sheet-metal forming manufacturing processes, such as punching using a machine press or stamping press, blanking, embossing, bending, flanging, and coining. This could be a single stage operation where every stroke of the press produces the desired form on the sheet metal part, or could occur through a series of stages.

    Stamping is usually carried out on sheet metal, but can also be used on other materials, such as polystyrene. Progressive dies are commonly fed from a coil of steel, coil reel for unwinding of coil to a straightener to level the coil and then into a feeder which advances the material into the press and die at a predetermined feed length. Depending on part complexity, the number of stations in the die can be determined. Stamping is usually done on cold metal sheet.

    Sheet Metal Stamping
    The so called "sheet stamping" is an industrial process and is thematically associated with sheet metal processing or considered to be its precursor. The selected material will be stamped by a machine into the desired format.

    Various materials such as aluminum, copper and various types of steel can be processed. The mechanical parts of the punching machine are nowadays supported by electronic components. Programmed computer systems contribute thereby significantly to the performance of modern machines. Furthermore, laser technology is used, whereby the cost can be minimized efficiently.

    The sheet stamping is used in Germany, especially in the automotive industry. There usually aluminum sheets are used, since they have only a low weight, are rust resistance and are also inexpensive to acquire. But also in the production of, for example, household appliances or computer hardware this process comes into application. Steel, especially stainless steel, is mainly used when a very high durability is required, however, an increased weight is not felt to be detrimental. An application example of this would be for example, a key pillar. Copper, however, is most often used when it comes to electrical conductivity or  heat dissipation (for example, cooling fins).

    The sheet stamping process takes place throughout production, where metals must be further processed. The material supplied blocks are thereby stamped on the concrete application, in order so that they can then form part of an industrial product. Through this operation, for example in an automobile factory a bare aluminum block can form the ground plan of a car door. In the further processing then occurs from said "blank", the finished car door. The sheet stamping thus represents an important preparatory process for the subsequent processing.
