The term gear transmission: Gear drives, the most commonly used gear drives for the transmission of rotary movements between adjacent shafts by means of positive interlocking of two gears mounted on these shafts. Gear drives transmit maximum power over a wide speed range. They operate slip-free with high operational reliability and service life, require low maintenance and are characterised by overload capability, small size and good efficiency. Gearboxes are adjusted according to the position of the two shafts, between them. and the type of gears used are divided into helical gears for parallel shafts, bevel gears for shafts cutting at an angle of 90º, gears with offset bevel gears (helical bevel gears, helical bevel gears, hypoid gears) for shafts crossing at a small distance, helical gears (helical gears for small torques) and worm gears (for larger torques) for shafts crossing at a larger distance. Gear drives with axles lying in one plane are generally also referred to as rolling drives (roller sliding of the tooth flanks), gear drives with intersecting axles as screw drives (additionally screw sliding in the direction of tooth width). For gear drives with external toothing, the output gear runs in the opposite direction to the drive gear. When using a ring gear with internal toothing in engagement with an external toothed spur gear, the direction of rotation is not reversed. The centre distance in gear drives is limited by the size of the gears; intermediate gears are therefore necessary for larger centre distances. A gear wheel is a wheel whose circumference is provided with small elevations and depressions, the so-called teeth and tooth gaps. The form of the power transmission is a positive connection. There are different basic forms of gears: Gears with involute toothing, cylindrical toothing or cycloidal toothing. Involute toothing is the most common.
