The axle drive is a component from the vehicle area. In a longitudinal motor it deflects the force by 90% to the drive axle via a bevel gearbox and transmits it to the drive wheels via spur gears in the case of a transverse motor. The essential tasks of the gearbox are the transmission of the torque between gearbox and drive wheels, the balancing of the corresponding transmission of the speed ratio between gearbox and drive wheels and the deflection of the power flow, if this is required. Furthermore, the different speeds of the drive wheels during cornering should be compensated by means of a differential gearbox and, for reasons of necessity, the axle offset (axle offset means that the axles of the cardan shaft and drive shafts do not intersect if a hypoid or worm drive is used).To provide a suitable transmission ratio, the torque converted by the gearbox must be increased in the axle drive so that sufficient torque is available for all vehicles. The torque is increased accordingly when the speeds converted by the gearbox are translated into low speed by the constant transmission ratio of the final drive. The transmission ratio of the engaged gear and the constant transmission ratio of the rear-axle transmission is used to calculate the total transmission of the driveline.The shift of the power flow is only necessary if the engine is arranged in the direction of the vehicle's longitudinal axle. Since the drive shafts always lie transversely to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, the power flow is deflected by 90%. Please note that the ring gear and bevel gear must be replaced at the same time. The power flow can be deflected by bevel, hypoid or worm wheel axle gears.In vehicles where the engine is arranged transversely to the vehicle longitudinal axis, the direction of the power flow does not have to be deflected only an axle offset must be provided
