A reel, often called Weife, is a technical aid for winding and unwinding elongated materials such as yarns, ropes, wires and tapes.A Weife usually consists of a cylindrical, spool-shaped or cross-shaped structure. The purpose is to bring the above mentioned materials into a handy, compact form to protect them from confusion and knotting and to store them until use. Most reels have a counter, which is mainly driven by gear wheels. The type of gear unit, whether mechanical or electrical, follows the intended use. In simple form, reels can be found in the whole normal household (e.g. the garden hose) which is rolled up by hand with the help of a crank . In industries and steelworks, however, coiling machines are used for coiling large cable drums, steel and wire drums.
