Angular gearboxes transmit torques from one axis to one or two other axes that are at an angle to the first axis. Different angle configurations are possible, but the angle is usually 90 degrees.The most commonly used type of angle gear is the bevel gear. The ring gear flanged to the driven axle drives one or two smaller pinions, which in turn are attached to the axles transmitting the force. The best known example of this type of transmission is the rear axle differential on a car with front engine and rear-wheel drive. Here the cardan shaft transmits the torque coming from the motor to the two wheel drive shafts via an angular gear unit.Angular gear units are very often used in mechanical engineering where torques have to be transmitted"around corners". In addition to bevel gears with straight, helical or curved bevel gears, there are also worm and hypoid gears. While the efficiency of a bevel gearbox with a higher transmission ratio is far superior to the worm gearbox, the advantage of the worm gearbox is that it is transmission-independent. With a hypoid gearbox, the centre distance determines the efficiency.
