MAG welding (metal active gas welding) is a method of arc welding and gas-shielded arc welding, whereby the welding filler metal (welding wire) is automatically unwound via a motor and a coil. To MAG welding you need a MAG welding unit which is operated with a mains input voltage of 230 Volt or 400 Volt. Welding is carried out with a current of up to 300 amperes. This results in an arc of up to 4000°C on the workpiece. With the aid of a variable speed, the welding wire is continuously fed to the welding point via the contact nozzle above the MAG welding torch.For MAG welding a shielding gas is used which predominantly has the task of protecting the weld metal from the penetration of oxygen. In most cases an argon-carbon dioxide mixture is used. The advantage of this is that it can be welded at higher temperatures and the material does not oxidize. MAG welding is only possible in closed spaces, since the shielding gas can be blown away by wind during welding.Generally MAG welding belongs to the partially mechanical metal shielding gas welding (MSG), including MIG welding (metal welding with inert gases).Application range for MAG welding:The applications of MAG welding are among others in steel construction, pressure vessel construction, machinery and plant construction, for welding reinforcing steel and pipelines, as well as for welding rail steels etc.
