A non-active gas is used for MIG welding (metal welding with inert gases). This gas does not react with the weld metal. Argon or helium is mostly used as protective gas. But there is also a mixture of argon and helium, which is used for welding precious metals, aluminium or copper. It is one of the most frequently used welding processes and enables welding of sheets of different wall thicknesses, unalloyed and high-alloyed steels as well as aluminium or copper, among others. The MIG process for use in welding robots makes it possible to considerably reduce the processing time in production.
