Interior design refers to the furnishing of private living spaces such as apartments and houses, business premises such as offices, public buildings such as theatres and museums, sacred buildings and more recently restored historical buildings. Although the user of an apartment is usually his own interior designer, professional interior designers such as architects and craftsmen and, since the turn of the century, specially trained interior designers can also take on this task. Users and interior designers are confronted with the task of designing furnishings for a given room that take into account the living conditions or needs of its inhabitants and the architecture of the respective building.At the beginning of the 15th century, attempts were made to harmonize the style of the exterior and interior design of buildings, primarily by contemporary artists. In the 18th century, carpenters, painters and decorators were responsible for the interior design until around the turn of the 20th century the interior designer began to develop as an independent profession. In Germany, the German workshops, the Bauhaus (in the 1920s and 1930s) and the Ulm University of Design (in the 1960s) set standards for functional living and influenced not only whole generations of architects, interior designers and designers, but also the users of rooms themselves.A continuing trend in interior design that has developed into the leading style of the late 20th century, despite all the high-tech furnishings, is the resumption of classicist forms and stylistic elements that manifested themselves in various cultural areas as postmodernism. Ecological and emotional deficits of classic modern interior design accelerated the emergence of post-modern styles and furnishings made of natural materials.
