The transformer (hereinafter referred to as transformer) is also referred to as a "static machine" (as opposed to a motor or generator), since it performs its function without moving parts.In a broader sense, it is a device that converts AC voltage of size X into another AC voltage of size Y, e.g. 230 volts into 24 volts. The voltage can be converted from the mains voltage with the relevant voltage of 230 volts or 400 volts (hence the name"mains transformer") into a lower or higher voltage. The transformer is often used in various devices as a link between the mains voltage (e.g. from the socket) and a low voltage that is harmless to humans. Voltages above 50 volts are already considered dangerous for humans.The mains transformer not only converts (transforms) the voltage, but also serves as a safe electrical isolation between the dangerous mains voltage and the harmless low voltage up to a maximum of 48 volts. This happens because the input voltage and the output voltage are not electrically and mechanically connected. Voltage and power are transmitted via an alternating magnetic field generated in the iron core, which is part of every transformer. The basic structure of a transformer thus consists of at least two windings, the input (also called primary winding) and the output winding (also called secondary winding), and a (so-called "soft magnetic") iron core. The input winding generates an alternating magnetic field in the iron core, which in turn induces a voltage in the output winding. Both windings are designed in tightly packed coils, which are arranged either side by side or one above the other around the iron core. They generally consist of copper wire, since copper is a very good electrical conductor and thus provides very little resistance to the electrical current.In principle, transformers can be installed in devices or, provided with a housing, can be used as so-called power supply units.
