In AC technology, a distinction is made between single-phase alternating current and three-phase alternating current, also known as three-phase current.AC current is transported in two conductors, the phase and the neutral conductor, or through three phases (i.e. three conductors) and a so-called neutral conductor. While only two coils (one input and one output winding) are required for the single-phase transformer, the three-phase transformer consists of six windings, three input windings and three output windings, each on one phase. The coils are applied to a three-leg iron core, with one pair of coils each lying on a sheet metal leg. With the three-phase transformer, available voltages (e.g. 3 x 400 volts) can be transformed both upwards and downwards. For example, from 3 x 400 volts to 3 x 24 volts, but also in high voltages, e.g. 3 x 20,000 volts for the so-called overhead lines.Bigger three-phase transformers require additional cooling, for this purpose they are installed in ribbed sheet metal housings which are filled with an insulating liquid (e.g. transformer oil). At lower outputs, cooling is effected by so-called convection. Depending on the type of mounting, a distinction is made between horizontal (flat) and vertical (high, but narrow) versions of the three-phase transformer.
