Malleable castings consist of an iron-carbon material. Unlike other types of cast iron, malleable cast iron solidifies graphite-free. As the melt cools, the graphite is ejected and a nodule-shaped annealing carbon is formed on the surface of the casting. These so-called tempered carbon flakes can be brushed away after the casting process. The resulting rough surface is a classic feature of malleable cast iron parts. The casting is very brittle after casting and must undergo a heat treatment, annealing. This process gives the casting good breaking and vibration resistance and makes it very easy to machine with e.g. CNC milling machines. White malleable castings In order to produce white malleable castings, the carbon content in the casting melt is increased to approx. 2.8% - 3.4%. In the actual annealing process (heat treatment of malleable cast parts), the raw casting is annealed at approx. 1000 °C for about 60 to 120 hours. This process also makes it possible to produce thin-walled castings with very good vibration resistance and breaking strength. White malleable cast iron is mainly used for the production of pipe fittings and machine housings. b black malleable castings The iron melt for black malleable castings has a carbon content of approx. 2.3 - 2.7%. The heat treatment (annealing) of this raw casting has a temperature range of 700 - 800 °C and lasts approx. 20 hours. One advantage of black malleable cast iron is its good castability, to which the material can be easily machined. Black malleable cast iron is therefore suitable for the manufacture of gears, pistons and engine components.
