Groundwater is extremely well suited as a heat source for a heat pump because of its consistently high temperature. Normally, two wells are required to supply a single-family house: one to draw water and a second to return it to the aquifer. A heat pump extracts the thermal energy from the extracted groundwater and thus heats the building. Hot water heating is also possible without problems. The main advantage of a geothermal well system is the even lower operating costs compared to a geothermal probe system. However, it can only be established where groundwater is available in sufficient quantity and quality.
