Geothermal heat pumps have become increasingly popular in recent years. Due to their compact design, they are very low-maintenance and robust. This pump works like a refrigerator - only vice versa. The refrigerator conveys the heat from the inside of the cabinet to the outside. It becomes cool inside and the temperature rises outside (even if only minimally). The heat pump transports the heat from the outside to the inside. It gets warm inside the house and cooler outside. However, the effect is unlikely to be noticeable on the outside. In outdoor areas, collectors are installed at a certain depth. Depending on the technology, these collectors are filled with a medium. Thus, energy is absorbed by the ground. The medium is compressed in the heart of the heat pump. This causes the temperature of the medium to rise rapidly. This heat energy can now be fed into the heating system of the house via a heat exchanger. The disadvantage of the heat pump is that the compressor requires energy in the form of electricity. The coefficient of performance of the heat pump indicates how much energy is gained from a kWh of electricity for the compressor in return for heat. Typical performance figures range from 3 to 4. If the coefficient of performance is too low, it would make more sense to heat directly with fossil fuels, because the electricity is generated with very poor efficiency in power plants. However, if a photovoltaic system is used, this alleged disadvantage is put into perspective.
