A heat exchanger is a technical device that is able to transfer thermal energy directly or indirectly from one material medium to another.


Direct heat transfer can be imagined as a kind of mixture, as if cold water is heated by adding hot water. Cooling towers often work according to the principle of direct heat transfer.

Indirect heat transfer, for example, is based on the principle of heating: Hot water gives off its heat to the metal, often in the form of pipes, and the metal in turn gives off the heat to the ambient air.

Naturally, the principle of a heat exchanger is a little more complicated. In industry, heat exchangers are not only used to generate heat, but also for cooling or processes such as pasteurization.


In order to increase efficiency and capacity, the two materials usually flow past each other in a heat exchanger. If, for example, cold and hot water are running against each other, the temperatures ideally exchange. If both run in direct current, temperatures tend to approach over time.


Heat exchangers are mainly used in the chemical industry or in the food industry, for example in the production of beverages or in dairies. The shell-and-tube heat exchanger is a form of heat exchanger that is also used in the food industry, for example in the pasteurisation of milk. Such a shell-and-tube heat exchanger is constructed as follows: Several small pipes run inside a large pipe. According to the principle of indirect heat transfer, this device is used for the pasteurisation of milk. The milk runs through the smaller pipes in the middle, while hot water runs through the large pipe. Heat is transferred to the milk via the metal of the inner pipes, which are surrounded by hot water. This method works both in countercurrent and direct current and is very gentle on the product. br>
