Heat can be transferred in the physical sense by radiation, transport or convection. Their propagation in a medium or at the interface between different materials is a diffusion process, which is sometimes also somewhat misleadingly called diffusion wave and is mathematically described by a diffusion equation. An important parameter is the specific heat capacity of the material. It basically describes the speed at which heat diffuses through matter or its ability to store heat over a longer period of time. Metals absorb a lot of heat very quickly and dissipate it very quickly. For this reason, transistors have been fitted with cooling plates, for example. Rocks heat up much more slowly, but remain warm for a long time after the energy supply has been switched off, they have a high heat capacity.
To choose the right material and design of heat exchangers, all these aspects of thermodynamics must be taken into account with regard to the respective application. In our domestic heating systems it is usually water that is used as heat exchanger, because it is inexpensive, and it has a heat capacity that can be used for this purpose, which represents a good compromise between relatively fast and energy-efficient heating with nevertheless adequate heat storage capacity. This water in the sense of a heat exchanger is and always remains in the boiler, which is heated directly by the burner. A pressure water pipe, which supplies fresh water for the bathtub, shower or washbasin, is usually led through the boiler in the form of a spiral. br>
The spiral line through the boiler, which may still have a reservoir, is primarily used to increase the surface area provided in the boiler for the transfer of heat. In general, the larger the surface area, the more effective the heat exchange. That is why any system that deals with heat exchange in any form will always be a construction in which larger heat exchange surfaces play an important role. The spiral in the heating system is made of metal (Cu), which absorbs the heat of the boiler water very quickly and dissipates it inwards to the fresh water.
A significantly larger dimensioned heat exchanger are the approx. 4000 m deep layers of rock in the catchment area of the so-called deep geothermal plants. In order to increase the heat exchange areas, the controversial fracking is often carried out in advance, whereby an emulsion of water, sand and chemicals tears open geological disturbances as well as latent, inactive disturbances under high pressure. As a result, earthquakes have demonstrably been triggered. In this case, the heat exchanger is the"disturbed" rock whose surface, which is relevant for the heat transfer to the incoming water, has been artificially enlarged.
