Temperature exchange for gasses
With air heat exchangers, there is an exchange of temperature between a gas (normally air) and a liquid. Very often air heat exxhangers are also used as waste-gas heat exchangers or smoke-gas heat exchangers for heat recovery.

Function
The heat exchanger is a technical apparatus that transfers thermal energy from one material flow to another. The use of heat exchangers is very versatile, both in industrial plants as well as in the domestic sector or in vehicle construction.
Applications
The energy exchange in a heat exchanger takes place between liquid and gaseous media. Depending on the physical state of the media, the applications are manifold.

Application areas
According to the different applications, there are an enormous number of application areas for heat exchangers.br>The use of exhaust gas heat is often used to preheat aspirated combustion air in industrial plants, for example in rotary heat exchangers.br>Air heating and cooling are typical for the operation of air conditioning systems.
In power plants, electricity is generated by evaporation of steam in steam boilers and subsequent expansion in steam turbines.A further use of heat exchangers in residential buildings is the heat transfer from the district heating network to the hot water network in a transfer station.

The two main types of heat transfer in the heat exchanger are direct and indirect heat transfer. The decisive factor here is the design. A representative application for indirect transfer is the wet cooling tower in industrial plants. Much more often one finds the indirect energy exchange between two spatially separated material flows, these apparatuses are also called recuperators. Tubular heat exchangers or plate heat exchangers are common designs for this purpose.

Constructively, the tubular heat exchanger consists of a hollow cylinder with innumerable small tubes inside. A frequent application is the heating of water or air. Steam or hot condensate flows through the outer cylinder, while cold water or air flows through the pipes. The hot medium cools down and the cold medium is heated.
