The heat exchanger is an apparatus that transfers thermal energy from one material flow to another. The materials used as heat exchangers are liquid and gaseous. These two materials must be separated from each other. In most cases, the surfaces of a heat exchanger are relatively large in order to give off more heat. In heat exchangers where a liquid and a gas are used, the heat capacity per volume of the substances varies greatly. Therefore, more gas than liquid must flow through and it is necessary to increase the area for heat transfer to the gas. This is often done by ribbing or sheet metal.
Recuperators each have a separate room for the two substances. There are plate heat exchangers. These consist of several parallel plates. The spaces in between are occupied alternately by one substance and another. Another form of heat exchanger is the spiral heat exchanger. Instead of plates, spirals are used as heat exchangers.
The tube heat exchanger consists of tubes with an associated boiler through which another material flows. They are very complex to manufacture because they have many welding points. The pipes are arranged parallel.
In a U-tube heat exchanger, the tubes are U-shaped. The advantage is that the tube bundle can be inserted more easily into the boiler and only one welding point is required. The boiler can be removed because it is only fixed on one side.
Then there is the jacket tube heat exchanger, which consists of two concentric tubes. The substance in the inner tube is heated or cooled by the substance in the outer tube, mostly water is used. This type of construction is used for materials where a high pressure can occur, as this is well endured.
The countercurrent layer heat exchanger is a recuperative heat exchanger consisting of several fins.
