Vertical lathes for vertical machining of workpieces The Vertical lathe (Vertical lathe) is a machine tool with vertical working spindle (turning spindle), which belongs to the lathes. It is suitable for particularly large workpieces. Since its design is reminiscent of a carousel, it is better known as a vertical lathe. The workpiece is clamped on a horizontally rotating face plate. For series production, the cutting machines have an exchangeable face plate and can also automatically turn the workpieces in series with the CNC vertical lathe. The advantage here is that there is no need to reclamp the workpiece and the face plate can be transferred to the next machine. Vertical lathes can also be equipped with tool holders (tool holders) for drilling and milling. Due to the possibility of large-area storage of the face plate, even very heavy workpieces can be machined. Disadvantage of the vertical lathe is that the length of the workpieces to be machined is limited. Tailstock or steady rest (devices for supporting a workpiece) are missing. The Vertical Lathe has a vertical working spindle and therefore requires only little space. Unlike the horizontal lathe, the turning length of this lathe is limited. This machine tool is ideally suited for fast series production, as it has numerical control technology similar to CNC lathes or CNC vertical lathes. In this case, the change of workpieces is taken over directly from the work spindle. The lathe chuck moves down and picks up the weir piece and then returns to its machining position. Furthermore, vertical lathes have a turret (tool turret) which can be equipped with different turning tools. With these machines for rotary stiffening it is possible to produce complex workpieces in large quantities and with a high process accuracy in one operation.
