Then, of course, there are also special lathes on the market, for example to be able to machine a rim. These rim lathes are used to remove small unevenness. A rim must always be correctly round, otherwise vibrations may occur on the axle at higher speeds. The rim lathes have special fixtures to which the rim to be machined is precisely adjusted. Turning material is done in the same way as with other lathes that machine round parts. An example where the wheel lathe can be used is a complete retread if the rim is damaged. Defective spots on the outer edge of the rim can be turned off on this machine tool so that the wheel can turn completely round again. Minor damage in the entire round rim area can also be turned off so that, for example, an aluminium rim shines in its new shine again. Of course the most important reason to have a rim turned off is to remove an existing damage that may have led to an out-of-round run. It is also important to have a smooth rim edge for the tyre, which must lie firmly and securely against the rim edge. By means of a special dial gauge defective out-of-round spots can be detected and eliminated.
