Wood copy lathes for carpentry and woodturning Holz copy lathes (often also called wood copy lathes) are a lower form of lathes for woodworking. The actual German name for it is"Nachformdrehmaschine", the name"Kopierdrehmaschine" probably comes from English, because there it is called"duplicating" or copying lathe". As with all lathes, workpieces are machined by rotation. In the copy lathe, however, the body or the surface of a pattern is scanned mechanically, transferred to the feed movement of the tool and the contour of the actual workpiece is reworked. The turning contour shape of a sample, for example a chess piece or a chair leg, is thus turned according to its shape or copied so that it becomes possible to produce a completely series of identical wooden workpieces or to turn a broken chair leg according to the shape of another. The wood copy lathe is often used for furniture production. While only a single movement of the cutting tool is possible with the conventional lathe, so that different diameters require adjustment of the lathe, the cutting tool can move along the contour line of the workpiece during copying or re-forming without manual adjustment. Mechanical, hydraulic or electrical methods are used to scan the original, which then control the feed of the tool. In any case, it is important that the transmission during copy turning is analogous, NC lathes are not included and have completely replaced the classic wood copy lathes, at least in large series production. The advantage of wood copy lathes, however, is still the high precision in series production at relatively low costs.
