Flame Cutting
Gas cutting is understood as a form of thermal splitting of steel. Thereby the steel must however first be heated to ignition point, so that the heated metal can be oxidized with an oxygen gas jet and blown out of the joint. The cutting torch, with which the separation process is carried out, can be machined or performed manually. The torch has a heater nozzle and a oxygen cutting nozzle lying in the middle of the annular heating nozzle. The heater nozzle emits a fuel gas-oxygen mixture, which initially heats the workpiece. When the ignition temperature is reached, the oxygen cutting nozzle is opened and the oxygen comes out at high pressure, leading to the oxidation of the steel. The low viscosity cutting slag, an iron oxide, is now blown out from the oxygen jet onto the joint.

Fuel gases used and application of oxyfuel cutting
Combustion gases are used as oxyacetylene or propane-oxygen mixtures. The flame cutting is used industrially or technically used wherever steel must be disconnected. For example, in shipbuilding, in heating or in apparatus engineering. A special form of oxyfuel cutting is the underwater flame cutting. Here the workpiece is automatically cooled by the cold water of the environment and thus does not warp.

Alternative separation processes?
So far in spite of the increasing establishment of plasma cutting, laser cutting and waterjet cutting there is not an economically comparable alternative to flame cutting. This is especially true for material above the 600 mm thickness mark. However, the cut quality in flame cutting with slag adhesion etc. is not always optimal.
