air separator in practical use An air separator is a component in piping systems which serves to remove gas bubbles from a liquid working medium. It is also known as the "deaerator". Venting or degassing serves to prevent the accumulation of gas bubbles in the system because they reduce efficiency or cause clogging in fine-pored components due to surface tension. The reduced efficiency is best known from radiators, where air bubbles accumulate in the radiator due to their low density and reduced flow and reduce the heat transfer to the room air due to their presence. This means that the heating system needs more energy. Many air separators are nowadays installed in thermal solar systems, where air accumulations hinder heat dissipation from the collector. There the air separator is installed at the highest point of the system. It is designed as a smaller vessel that is switched on in the heat exchanger flow. Air from the heat exchanger collects in this container. This causes the liquid level in the air separator to drop, which is detected by a small float. When the liquid level has fallen below a certain level, the lowering of the float triggers the opening of a valve through which the air is released from the pressurized circuit into the atmosphere. As soon as the heat exchanger mirror is sufficiently high again, the float closes the valve again.
