Dust-free and pure Dust separators are plant components with the task of removing extremely fine-grained solids from a gas stream. This can be done in various ways, whereby three principles have become established in practical use. Firstly, there is the filter principle, in which the gas flow is passed through a finely porous material and dust gets trapped in the material of the filter, but is difficult to remove later. Secondly, the cyclone principle is in use. The dusty gas stream is directed into a chamber in which it is forced onto a circular path, whereby the heavier dust particles are separated by centrifugal forces on the chamber wall. The gas, on the other hand, is discharged from the centre of the chamber. With the cyclone principle, the dust is often collected less completely, but sorted by type for further use. The third principle is that of the electrostatic precipitator. The dust particles themselves are first electrically charged and then attach themselves to oppositely charged metal plates by electrostatic attraction. Through various advantages and disadvantages, these principles are applied in different areas. The simple filter is mostly used in small industrial plants, as well as in vacuum cleaners with bags and in automotive soot filters. The cyclone is usually used in plants in which the dust is to be further processed, while the electrostatic precipitator is used in the flue gas cleaning of large power plants.
