This particle formation results from a mechanical working process, such as spinning or dispersion, as well as from fast rotating tools. If the oil or emulsion is additionally heated due to high cutting speeds, evaporation occurs. Oil smoke or emulsion mist is produced. Emissions and the heavy metals they contain are inhaled - they are deposited on machines and work surfaces.

Emulsion mist separators are filter systems in which dispersed solid or aerosol particles are retained. The exhaust air to be cleaned is passed through a porous medium and the impurities are retained. The particles or emulsion mist arise in many processes of industrial production, for example in machining processes supported by cooling lubricants. These undesirable by-products pollute the ambient air and are potentially harmful to health. On the one hand, they are absorbed by the employees via the respiratory tract or via the skin and on the other hand they wet surfaces in the area of the affected machine. A complex topic is the design of the corresponding separators for the resulting emissions. Assessment criteria include the conveying speed, the direction of flow and the required clean gas concentration. Filtration separators provide a high degree of separation even with high raw gas loads and compared to droplets and are primarily used in industrial production, i.e. either decentrally at each emission source or centrally over the entire machinery. Optimum application possibilities can be found in the processes of turning, drilling and milling. One possible application is an oil mist separator and emulsion mist separator for the extraction of vapours generated during the die casting process. Some of the recovered oils and emulsions can be fed directly back into the machine.
